Pfizer launches emerging-markets discounts

Neelesh says:

hmmm…

Amplifyd from www.fiercepharma.com

In a bid to make it easier for emerging-markets customers to buy its drugs, Pfizer has launched an discount-card system that offers price cuts of up to 50 percent. The company is unveiling the program in Russia this month, looking to attract 500,000 patients over the next year or so. And it’s aiming for fast-growing card programs in Mexico, Brazil and Venezuela, too.

Like the price breaks instituted by other companies in emerging markets–notably GlaxoSmithKline and Sanofi-Aventis–the aim of these is to boost the number of scrips in a big way in hopes of making more money by bringing in less from each patient.

But that’s not all. By using a discount card to deliver the price cut, Pfizer will be able to collect information on each patient who uses its drugs. If a patient fails to refill a scrip on time, for instance, the company could contact that person with a reminder.Read more at www.fiercepharma.com

Doctors face Buyers remorse after healthcareIT expenditure.

Neelesh says:

Like jumping in with your eyes wide shut.

Amplifyd from www.healthcareitnews.com

WASHINGTON – Doctors who have shopped for healthcare software have sometimes come to regret their purchases, according to a new story reported by the Huffington Post Investigative Fund.

In her feature, Emma Schwartz finds that physicians are often frustrated with their switch from paper to electronic medical records – spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on software programs, only to find that the new systems are faulty or ineffective.

Beyond faulty software, Schwartz finds that fast-evolving technologies often complicate things, especially for doctors who are unfamiliar with new and complex systems and who aren’t well-versed in the proper questions to ask in order to ensure quality purchases.

Meanwhile, with so many new players in the industry, it’s expected that there will be considerable contraction in the coming years – and it’s possible that providers might purchase expensive systems from a company that may go out of business.

Blogging is being seen as a “matured” use.

Amplifyd from www.usatoday.com
The young prefer Facebook to blogging, Twitter
A new report paints a picture of how teens and young adults are using social media these days.

Teens are eating up Facebook but are not so keen on Twitter, and they are not blogging as much as they used to, according to the Pew Internet Project’s report.

The report highlights data gathered from two telephone surveys in September, one that focused on teens ages 12-17 and a second survey of adults 18 and older.

Lenhart says blogging among teens and young adults has plummeted to half what it was in 2006. In that year, 28% of teens ages 12-17 and adults ages 18-29 were bloggers. By the fall of 2009, the numbers had dropped to 14% of teens and 15% of young adults. During the same period, the percentage of online adults over 30 who were bloggers rose from 7% in 2006 to 11% in 2009.

Five drugs to watch out for !

Amplifyd from www.pharmalot.com

Which drugs will be worth watching this year? Assuming FDA approvals come through as planned - and handicapping that possibility is trickier than ever (see here) - Barron’s compiled a list with the help of a few analysts. The presumption is that, once approval occurs, these meds will likely become blockbusters, that old-fashioned term for the biggest of sellers. And so, in no particular order, here they are…

Victoza - the recently approved diabetes drug from Novo Nordisk;
Xarelto* - a clotbuster from Bayer and Johnson & Johnson;
Prolia* - an osteoporosis treatment from Amgen;
Qnexa* - the Vivus obesity pill;
Provenge* - Dendreon’s controversial prostate cancer vaccine.

* - not yet approved by the FDA

EHR use increases amongst office-based Physicians #ehealth

Amplifyd from www.healthcareitnews.com

Survey finds 4 in 10 doctors use an EHR

January 11, 2010 | Molly Merrill, Associate Editor

ATLANTA – Four of every 10 office-based physicians use electronic health records, according to 2009 preliminary estimates by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The estimates are based on the CDC’s National Ambulatory Medical Survey (NAMCS), an annual nationally representative survey of patient visits to office-based physicians that collects information on the use of electronic medical records or electronic health records. A supplementary mail survey was also conducted in 2008 and 2009.

According to the estimates for 2009, 43.9 percent of physicians reported using full or partial EMR/EHR systems (not including systems used solely for billing) in office-based practices. About 20.5 percent reported having systems that meet the criteria of a basic system, and 6.3 percent reported using a fully functional system.

Doctors and online communities -

Neelesh says:

#ehealth , #socialmedia

Amplifyd from www.medscape.com
Doctors can turn to a good number of online communities especially for physicians or other healthcare professionals. Some, like MedHelp, connect professionals with the public to answer health questions. MedHelp users often find this site by Googling the name of a medication,
Other interactive Websites are restricted to licensed clinicians. Popular names in this sphere include Medscape Physician Connect, Sermo, and Ozmosis, plus many aimed at various medical specialties. Internationally, there are DoctorsHangout.com and several global imaging repositories, including a bilingual English/Spanish site for radiology called MedTing. There’s even a site specifically for telehealth professionals, boost.me.
Greenbranch Publishing, publisher of the Journal of Medical Practice Management, debuted Codapedia, a clearinghouse of sorts for medical coding and reimbursement information
